Today was Kick-off day for novel writing and students started off with a CRAFT LESSON about the four ways of beginning a novel:
- At the beginning (character introduction/background/set-up)
- Inciting Incident (the spark that sets the story in motion, aka the Catalyst **science connection**
- In Media Res (In the middle of things, any other spot on your plot rollercoaster--rising action or climax)
- At the end (a flash-forward to show the end of your story, and a GREAT way for any novelist to get a sense of where the story is headed)
Remember, Novelists: Look for inspiration EVERYWHERE: Details from your daily life, conflicts, overheard conversations, dreams, etc., all of it can feed character creation and plot development. Notice setting!
